Application of PermaFloc PC-306 Polydadmac
1. Introduction to PermaFloc PC-306
PermaFloc PC-306 is a high-charge cationic polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PolyDADMAC) coagulant designed for water and wastewater treatment applications. PolyDADMAC is a cationic polymer that primarily acts through charge neutralization, rapidly destabilizing negatively charged colloids, natural organic matter (NOM), algae, fine suspended solids, and emulsified particles. Unlike long-chain polyacrylamide flocculants that rely mainly on bridging mechanisms, PolyDADMAC’s high cationic charge density makes it particularly effective for small, colloidal particles that resist settling.
PermaFloc™ PC-306 is supplied as a liquid concentrate, making it easy to dose and integrate into existing water treatment systems. It is compatible with inorganic coagulants, such as alum and ferric salts, as well as other polymeric flocculants, providing operational flexibility across diverse water treatment scenarios.
2. Municipal Drinking Water Treatment
2.1 Raw Water Clarification
PermaFloc™ PC-306 is widely applied in municipal water treatment plants to clarify surface water, river water, and reservoirs. Raw water typically contains clay, silt, algae, and natural organic matter that carry negative surface charges, which prevent particle aggregation.
When dosed in a rapid-mix zone, PermaFloc™ PC-306 quickly neutralizes these charges, promoting microfloc formation. This improves sedimentation efficiency, reduces turbidity, and enhances downstream filtration performance.
2.2 Color and Organic Matter Reduction
-
Removes humic and fulvic acids, which contribute to water color and act as precursors to disinfection byproducts (DBPs).
-
Reduces trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) formation during chlorination.
2.3 Coagulant Aid
-
Often used as a coagulant aid with alum, ferric chloride, or polyaluminum chloride (PAC).
-
Improves floc formation, reduces metal salt consumption, and lowers sludge production.
-
Enhances filter run times and reduces filter maintenance.
2.4 Seasonal and Algae-Impacted Waters
-
Effective in water bodies with seasonal turbidity spikes or algal blooms.
-
Reduces filter headloss caused by algae and fine suspended solids, improving water treatment plant stability.
3. Municipal Wastewater Treatment
3.1 Primary Clarification Enhancement
PermaFloc™ PC-306 is used to improve primary clarification by enhancing the settling of suspended solids, fats, oils, and grease (FOG) in domestic wastewater. The polymer neutralizes colloidal charges, resulting in larger, denser flocs that settle faster.
3.2 Sludge Conditioning
-
Applied before gravity thickening or mechanical dewatering processes (centrifuges, belt presses, and filter presses).
-
Neutralizes sludge particle charges, promoting aggregation and improving free water release.
-
Often used in combination with high-molecular-weight polyacrylamide flocculants to optimize dewatering and reduce overall polymer consumption.
3.3 Secondary Clarification Support
-
Enhances removal of fine suspended solids that escape the primary clarifier.
-
Supports overall plant efficiency and reduces the load on biological treatment systems.
4. Industrial Wastewater Applications
4.1 Food and Beverage Industry
-
Treats wastewater containing proteins, fats, oils, and suspended solids.
-
Destabilizes emulsified oils and organic matter, improving separation and reducing COD before biological treatment.
4.2 Pulp and Paper Industry
-
Clarifies effluent containing fiber fines, fillers, inks, and dissolved organics.
-
Enhances dissolved air flotation (DAF) performance and reduces residual turbidity.
4.3 Textile and Dyeing Industry
-
Neutralizes negatively charged dyes and surfactants.
-
Promotes sedimentation of colloidal solids and removal of color from wastewater.
4.4 Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Effluent
-
Breaks emulsified oils and suspended solids in refinery and petrochemical wastewater.
-
Improves the efficiency of API separators, flotation units, and secondary clarifiers.
