polyamine dosage for industrial wastewater treatment

For polyamine dosage in industrial wastewater treatment, the correct amount depends on wastewater characteristics, suspended solids, colloidal stability, color, pH, and the concentration of the commercial polyamine product.

Polyamine is primarily a cationic coagulant. It is commonly used to neutralize particle charges, improve clarification, remove certain types of color, and assist sludge conditioning. The dosage should be optimized through jar testing rather than selected from a fixed number alone.

1. Typical polyamine dosage ranges

The following ranges are useful as initial screening values, not guaranteed optimum dosages. One industrial wastewater treatment reference gives a broad starting range of 10–200 mg/L for polyamine, while a published brewery-wastewater study illustrates why jar testing is necessary.

Application

Initial dosage range to investigate

Industrial wastewater clarification

10–50 mg/L

High-turbidity wastewater

20–100 mg/L

Textile dyeing wastewater

20–100 mg/L

Mining wastewater and tailings water

10–100 mg/L

Oil and gas produced water

10–100 mg/L

High-strength or difficult-to-treat wastewater

50–200 mg/L

These are preliminary test ranges, not industry-wide standards. Actual demand can fall below or exceed them depending on wastewater composition, polyamine formulation, and treatment conditions.

2. How to determine the optimum dosage

  1. Collect a representative wastewater sample.

  2. Prepare six jars with equal sample volumes.

  3. Test a control sample without polyamine.

  4. Add polyamine at 10, 20, 40, 60, and 100 mg/L.

  5. Rapidly mix to distribute the coagulant, then mix gently to encourage particle aggregation.

  6. Allow the samples to settle and compare turbidity, color, floc formation, and sludge characteristics.

  7. Test additional dosages around the best-performing result.

Jar testing is the recommended method for identifying the effective coagulant dosage. Excessive dosing may waste chemicals or destabilize particles again.

3. Calculate the daily chemical consumption

For a wastewater flow of 500 m³/day and a selected dose of 40 mg/L:

\[ \text{Active chemical (kg/day)} =\frac{40\times500}{1000}=20 \]

The requirement is 20 kg/day of active polyamine. If the commercial product contains 40% active solids, the approximate product consumption is:

\[ \frac{20}{0.40}=50\text{ kg/day} \]

This calculation assumes the stated 40% represents the relevant active content; confirm the supplier's specification before applying the conversion.

4. How to reduce polyamine consumption

  • Select a polyamine grade with suitable cationic charge density for the wastewater.

  • Adjust pH where testing shows it improves treatment.

  • Dilute the product as recommended by the supplier to improve dispersion.

  • Optimize rapid mixing and flocculation conditions.

  • Test polyamine with an appropriate polyacrylamide flocculant when larger flocs or improved settling are needed.

  • Compare total treatment cost per cubic meter, not just chemical price.
