Polyacrylamide / The equivalent of ZETAG 4145 anionic polyacrylamide can be replaced by Chinafloc
ZETAG 4145 is a high-performance anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) flocculant widely used in solid–liquid separation processes across mining, alumina refining, wastewater treatment, and various heavy industrial operations. It is designed with a high molecular weight and medium to high anionic charge density, enabling it to efficiently aggregate fine suspended solids into large, fast-settling flocs. Its primary value lies in improving settling rates, enhancing clarification, increasing underflow density, and maximizing water recovery in difficult slurries.
One of the most important applications of ZETAG 4145 is in the alumina refining industry, particularly within the Bayer process. During bauxite digestion, insoluble residues known as red mud are generated and must be separated from the pregnant liquor. ZETAG 4145 is commonly dosed in red mud thickeners, settlers, and washer circuits, where it promotes rapid flocculation of fine red mud particles. The polymer bridges negatively charged mineral surfaces, forming dense and shear-resistant flocs that settle quickly. As a result, overflow liquor clarity is significantly improved, which is critical for downstream precipitation and evaporation steps. At the same time, the thickener underflow becomes more concentrated, reducing mud volume and improving washing efficiency. This directly leads to lower caustic soda losses and reduced operating costs.
In red mud washing stages, ZETAG 4145 plays a key role in counter-current decantation (CCD) circuits. Efficient flocculation allows faster settling and better phase separation, ensuring that valuable sodium aluminate liquor is recovered while minimizing entrainment in the mud. This is especially important in modern refineries processing fine or reactive bauxites, where natural settling is slow and inefficient. The use of ZETAG 4145 helps stabilize washer operation and maintain consistent overflow quality even under variable feed conditions.
Another major application area is mineral processing and mining operations. ZETAG 4145 is used in tailings thickening, concentrate dewatering, and process water clarification. In tailings thickeners, it enhances the aggregation of fine clay, silica, and oxide particles, enabling higher solids throughput and improved water recycling. The clarified overflow water can be reused in grinding and flotation circuits, reducing freshwater consumption and supporting sustainable mining practices. In some operations, ZETAG 4145 is also applied prior to filtration, where improved floc structure leads to higher filtration rates and lower cake moisture.
ZETAG 4145 is also widely applied in industrial wastewater treatment, particularly where effluents contain high levels of inorganic suspended solids. Typical industries include metal finishing, chemical manufacturing, coal washing, power generation, and construction materials. When used in primary clarification or lamella settlers, the polymer rapidly destabilizes colloidal particles and forms settleable flocs, reducing turbidity and total suspended solids (TSS). This improves compliance with discharge regulations and protects downstream biological treatment units from excessive solids loading.
In municipal and industrial sludge thickening, ZETAG 4145 can be used as a conditioning agent prior to gravity thickening or mechanical dewatering. Although cationic polymers are more common for biological sludges, anionic grades like ZETAG 4145 are effective for inorganic or mineral-rich sludges, such as lime sludge, metal hydroxide sludge, and dredging sediments. The polymer improves solids capture and increases sludge concentration, reducing handling and disposal costs.
The product is also applied in clarification of process water and recycled water systems. In cooling water basins, stormwater ponds, and process sumps, ZETAG 4145 assists in removing fine suspended particles, preventing sediment buildup and improving overall water quality. Its high molecular weight allows effective flocculation at relatively low dosages, making it economical for large-volume water treatment applications.
From an operational perspective, ZETAG 4145 is typically supplied as a dry powder or emulsion and is diluted with water before dosing. Proper make-down, aging time, and mixing conditions are essential to achieve optimal polymer performance. When correctly applied, it delivers consistent floc size, strong settling behavior, and stable clarification even under high shear environments.
In summary, ZETAG 4145 is a versatile anionic polyacrylamide flocculant primarily used in alumina refining, red mud settling and washing, mining tailings management, industrial wastewater treatment, and inorganic sludge thickening. Its ability to improve settling rates, enhance overflow clarity, and maximize water recovery makes it an essential chemical in modern solid–liquid separation systems, especially where fine mineral particles and high-alkalinity conditions are present.
